Gloriavale follows the Ready family, exploring serious allegations at the Gloriavale Christian Community on the West Coast. After Sharon Ready's daughter died of asphyxiation, her son John, who'd left the religious sect, launched a civil case against its leaders, claiming Gloriavale women lived "in servitude". Sharon's daughter Virginia and her kids left the community over cases of sexual abuse. In this trailer Sharon, John and Virginia reflect on their time at Gloriavale, and lawyer Liz Gregory mentions "unending" revelations by ex-members. The Australian-NZ doco debuted at the 2022 NZ International Film Festival.
I have seen so much sorrow and so much pain from families being torn apart ... my children with their whole families leaving the community ... I can’t just walk away from them when they were such in turmoil over the uncertainty they faced starting a new life on the outside and I couldn’t leave the community to go with them.– Gloriavale member Sharon Ready on the dilemma facing members and ex-members of the sect, The Sunday Star-Times, 10 July 2022
